Swarovski Fragrance Launch

Amalgam Clarins Swarovsky

Client: Clarins Amalgam was commissioned by Clarins to produce a series of illuminated crystal encrusted columns for the Swarovski Fragrance Launch which was part of the Selfridges retail displays. These included a 4 metre tall version in Oxford Street as well as a smaller 'window' half round version in Manchester.

Vacuum Casting The Gap Gun

Client: Third Dimension Vacuum casting, using silicone elastomers and polyurethane resins plays a major part in the production of  this rugged, hand-held laser measuring gauge, which has been a long term, batch-run product manufactured by Amalgam for Third Dimension, a world leader in non-contact optical metrology solutions. Utilising our extensive vacuum casting facilities and a broad range of knowledge related to polyurethane resins and silicone elastomers , we have been able to constantly  revise and develop the Gap Gun's outer casing and range of peripherals to better meet the end users needs. New connection ports have been added, cutting edge high impact resins implemented and a cost efficient value range introduced. Although primarily intended for prototyping, vacuum casting has also proved perfect for the varying requirements of several end users. Bubblescope prototype

Tom Lawton Bubblescope

Client: Tom Lawton Bubblescope, devised by inventor Tom Lawton, allows the user to capture a full 360 degree photograph, or film a 360 degree high-definition video. Amalgam modelmakers worked closely with Tom in a truly collaborative capacity to create the first working prototypes of the device. Amongst other things we developed the intricate physical mechanisms that allowed the Bubblescope to clip to a smartphone, unlock and spring out of its protective casing and continue to be involved as Bubblescope is adapted to fit Samsung, Blackberry and other smartphones. Routemaster Concept

Client: Foster + Partners The Routemaster bus model was made to accompany Foster and Partners' and Aston Martin's collaborative entry in Transport for London's competition to design a new London bus. The simple solid shape, with a high-gloss spray finish was a 1:25 scale, full colour model . The Routemaster concept was described by Foster and Partners as '..a vehicle that is environmentally sensitive, accessible, convivial and re-invents a much loved symbol of London for the modern era.'

Bike Generator

Amalgam GSC Bike Generator

Client: Glasgow Science Centre A hand-powered electricity demonstration unit for Glasgow Science Centre, the Bike Generator demonstrates how movement can be converted into power. The display is based on the principles of a dynamo. Magnets are attached to the bicycle wheel which passes through coils held in housings; as it does so, an electrical current is generated and amplified. A readout shows the user how much energy they have generated by turning the pedals.

Amalgam Hendricks Cocktail Shaker

Client: Hendricks The Edwardian-influenced 'Steam Powered' Cocktail Shaker featured at the 2006 Chap Olympics, a sporting event held by The Chap sartorial magazine and Hendricks Gin. The burnished brasswork and vintage styling was perfectly suited to an event attended by hundreds of Woosters, Jeeveses, Hooray Henries, Flappers, Rotters and Cads. Hurrah!

Post Secret Bollards

Amalgam Jane Edden Postsecret

Client: Jane Edden Amalgam Modelmakers worked with artist Jane Edden to create a series of tiny scenes enclosed in bollards dotted around The Hayes in Cardiff city centre. The miniature scenes can be viewed through a tiny pinhole in the bollard's outer shell. Edden goes into further detail about her work and inspiration in an interview with the BBC.

Promotional Stand for Mech RC

Amalgam Kablamm! RC Mech

Client: Kablamm! This sci-fi, grunge style promotional stand was made to promote educational robot toys for the Nuremberg Toy Fair. The mini robots were displayed in the industrial style mini arena and the eye-catching stand attracted high volumes of visitors of all ages. The various components of the stand were built using MDF, foam pvc, vac-formed plastics and some metal work, all designed to be assembled easily for use as a travelling promotional exhibition.

BBC Gardener’s World Live Exhibit

Amalgam BBSRC Gardener's World

Client: BBSRC Amalgam Display produced this exhibition stand for BBSRC for the BBC Gardeners World Exhibition at the NEC. BBSRC  provided a 'plant surgery' where visitors to the exhibition could tap into the wealth of knowledge possessed by the BBSRC scientists to diagnose diseases and suggest treatment for the leafy patients. The exhibition stand, designed in house by Amalgam Design, was  divided into two distinct and contrasting sections, a science lab and a potting shed. There were some eye-catching elements such as giant plants, old boots and a microscope which were designed to engage visitors from afar and draw them in to the stand. The really clever bit was that all the walls of the stand were constructed from entirely recycled and compostable material, making sure that the environmental footprint of this stand was at an absolute minimum.
