Minion!!

We are really excited to share this latest model we have created for the Brussels HQ of Sky Creative. Standing at 1 meter tall, we initially had to create the 3D CAD from 2D images to give us a drawing that we could then use to CNC machine the body and other parts of the Minion. Following a layer of hard coat paint our Ellie set about applying the iconic blue and yellow paint finish before the goggles and other details were added. The spikey hair was 3D printed on our Formlabs printer in a Flexible Resin so the hairs were not only safer in a public setting, but also looked and felt different to the rest of the figure.  Ewelina Sniatowska, a Producer at Sky Creative who commissioned the model, had these kind words to say about the project:- "Amalgam team were brilliant. They created an amazing Minion figure which…

Exploded G-SHOCK Watch for Carnaby Street Store Display

G Shock display front

To help Double Retail realise a high impact store display centrepiece for G-SHOCK’s flagship store on Carnaby Street, London, our point of sale specialists worked with project lead, Dave Corke to develop the 3D design. Double Retail’s vision for the store was to make everything technically advanced for both customers and staff, in keeping with the Casio products. To make the most of the space, the basement was designed as an innovative and creative event space, serving as a go-to hub for customers and all things G-SHOCK. Our brief was to expose the G-SHOCK watch in an outsize model for the shop entrance. We started with the design drawings, re-creating the layers of the G-SHOCK product design in 3D CAD. Once it was scaled up, we had to select the right materials to build it and bring the idea to life. Given the look and feel of the store design…

Boaty McBoatface replica models – Made in Bristol.

Boaty McBoatface Natural History Museum

As part of a significant UK Government investment in marine robotics, the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) are funding further development of the Autosub Long Range (ALR) vehicle, famously named Boaty McBoatface after the infamous public vote in 2016. Over 4 metres in length, Boaty is built and being further developed by the National Oceanography Centre for underwater scientific research, including into the effects of climate change. The ALR fleet will soon stand at 6 units, which are deployed around the world in support of science projects – like the UK-US research mission to explore beneath the Thwaites Glacier. Because the fleet is constantly in use but constitutes a large investment of government funds, NERC needed a way to engage the public and academia with their progress in scientific research. Digital communications manager, Karen Christian, organises showcase events around the UK to promote NERC’s work in polar science. She saw…

Babcock Arrowhead 120

The 1:150 Babcock Arrowhead 120 model was built as the largest in a set of four for Babcock and their stand at DSEI 2017. At this scale the model is nearly a metre long, and covered in intricate handmade details.     While we use CNC machining and 3D printing to ensure symmetry and precision, everything beyond the raw shape of the hull is hand finished and fabricated.

Babcock Defender 90

We made the Babcock Defender 90 model as one of a set of four for Babcock's display at DSEI 2017. As with the others in the range, the hull is a solid, handfinished CNC machined block, mounted on stainless steel stantions bolted to a polished black base. The model includes many fine details showing the funcitonality of the platform; mission bays, safety gear, cargo holds and specialist equipment for this variant of the Babcock platform.

Babcock Protector 50

The Babcock Protector 50 model was made as one of a set of four for Babcock and their stand at DSEI 2017. The models demonstrate their multipurpose, customisable platform range, showing example configurations and roles for the craft.     CAD files supplied directly by the client were used to create the 3D printed hull; after being carefully hand-finished to remove the build lines inherent in the 3D printing process, we constructed the superstructure and dressed the deck with etched brass railings, cleats, antennae and other fine details. Like the other models in the range for Babcock, we mounted the hull on stainless steel stantions bolted to a polished black base for the show.

Babcock Protector 25

Most of the bespoke marine models we are commissioned to produce are usually around a metre in length, being for the defence industries or superyacht designers. The Babcock Protector 25, at 1:150 scale, is barely 200mm in length, 3D printed as a single solid block, hand-finished, and dressed with fine handcrafted details.     The Protector 25 is one of many marine models we have made for Babcock; most recently we completed a set of four models for DSEI 2017.

Western Power Distribution ‘Freedom Street’ Demonstration Models

"Amalgam designed the interactive model based upon supplied outline sketches and a spreadsheet of the control functions and outcomes. The building process, which involved a wide range of specialist model making functions, followed the agreed programme and the models were delivered within budget and on time. The models have added significant value to the messaging of a complex project amongst energy sector stakeholders, including senior policy makers and government ministers." - Oliver Lancaster, Wales & West Utilities   We made two of these demonstration models, one for Western Power Distribution and one for Wales & West Utilities. The models demonstrate how the energy is supplied from two distribution networks to deliver smart hybrid heating in homes at the lowest possible cost. The decision to use electricity in a heat pump or gas in a boiler depends on the live availability of renewable power, the capacity of the electricity system to…
